Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe, in New Washoe City, Nevada, fired up its snowmaking machines for the 2026-27 ski season Monday as temperatures at the Sierra Nevada resort fell low enough to make snow. It was the first of the area’s ski resorts to begin making snow, according to a news release from the resort.
The ski resort said in its release that its base elevation of 8,260 feet — the highest among Lake Tahoe ski resorts — and mostly north- and east-facing slopes helped its “robust snowmaking system” take full advantage of the below-freezing, low-humidity conditions early Monday.
“It’s always exciting to see the first taste of winter, and as an added bonus, to be able to crank out snowmaking in force over the next couple of days,” said Mt. Rose marketing director Mike Pierce in the news release. “We plan to make as much snow as possible with this latest cold snap and then be ready for all future opportunities to crank up the system.”
Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe plans to open for the season Friday, Nov. 6, conditions permitting. According to the release, the resort will be ready to open to skiers and snowboarders once at least one of its popular trails near the Lakeview lift or in Kit Carson Bowl has an average snow depth of 10 to 14 inches.

Last year, warm weather pushed the Nevada ski resort’s opening to Nov. 21, but it was able to stay open through April 19 thanks to late-season snowstorms.
Some of the first snowflakes of the season are expected to fall Monday evening on higher Sierra Nevada peaks between Lake Tahoe and Mammoth Lakes, The Bee previously reported.
A National Weather Service forecast for Mt. Rose issued Monday afternoon indicated a slight chance of snow through the afternoon and early evening. Overnight temperatures through Thursday were expected to remain below freezing before rising above 32 degrees starting Friday night.
