Zverev comes from a family where tennis has been a major part of life for decades. Before the German star became a Grand Slam champion, both of his parents were professional tennis players who later became coaches.
Zverev was introduced to tennis at a very young age by his parents, Alexander Zverev Sr. and Irina Zvereva.
Currently, Zverev is one of the top players in men’s tennis and has the chance to secure his second grand slam of his career at the US Open on Sunday, Sept. 13. He won his first Grand Slam title at the 2026 French Open.
Who Are Alexander Zverev’s Parents?
Alexander Zverev’s parents are Alexander Zverev Sr. and Irina Zvereva. Both were professional tennis players for the Soviet Union before moving to Germany.
The couple was originally from Sochi, Russia, and later moved to Moscow as they continued their tennis careers. When the Soviet Union was coming to an end, they moved to Germany in 1991 after receiving coaching opportunities in Hamburg.
Their first son, Mischa Zverev, was born in Moscow in 1987. Alexander was born nearly 10 years later in Hamburg.
Alexander Zverev Sr. was a professional tennis player who represented the Soviet Union and reached a career-high singles ranking of No. 175 in the world and was one of the top men’s players in the Soviet Union.
He competed in Grand Slam events and also represented the Soviet Union in Davis Cup competition. After relocating to Germany, Zverev Sr. later moved into coaching.
His mother, Irina was also a professional tennis player for the Soviet Union and was ranked as high as No. 4 among women in the Soviet Union during her career.
She worked closely with her son from an early age and helped him develop his technique and her influence has been especially noticeable in his two-handed backhand.

Alexander Zverev’s Parents Moved From Russia to Germany
Although Zverev was born in Germany and represents Germany, both of his parents have roots in Russia and the former Soviet Union.
The family moved to Germany in 1991, when Alexander was still years away from being born while his older brother Mischa was four years old at the time.
The move gave the family the opportunity to continue working in tennis while building a new life in Germany. Both parents eventually focused on coaching and helped their sons pursue professional tennis.
