Ryan Garcia and Conor Benn are just days away from settling their rivalry inside the ring, but one of the final details surrounding Saturday’s fight has generated plenty of attention.

Team Garcia requested permission for the fighters to remain in eight-ounce gloves even if one or both come in over the welterweight limit. With Friday’s official weigh-in still ahead, Garcia has now explained why his camp wanted the stipulation in place.
Ryan Garcia Explains Conor Benn Fight Stipulation
Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix reported Wednesday that the request originated with Team Garcia and that Team Benn agreed to it. Both camps reportedly viewed it as a precaution, with each side believing the fighters were on track to make weight.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission was asked to permit eight-ounce gloves if either fighter comes in above the welterweight limit. Mannix reported that bouts above 148 pounds in Nevada would otherwise move to 10-ounce gloves.
During Wednesday’s final press conference, Garcia was asked about the request and explained his reasoning. His comments were shared by veteran boxing reporter Lance Pugmire.

“It was more of just a cautionary thing in case he doesn’t make weight,” Garcia said. “I’d better still use eight-ounce gloves because, you know, that’s what I always try to have at 147, and I don’t want to fight with 10-ounce.”
Garcia said. “You know, it’s more deadly than eight-ounce anyway, so that’s kind of why I did that.”
Garcia was also asked whether he believes Benn will successfully make weight.
“It’ll be close, but I’m sure he will,” Garcia said.

Garcia and Benn Still Have to Make Weight
Garcia’s explanation provides important context behind the request. His comments don’t suggest his camp expects Benn to miss weight. Instead, Garcia described the stipulation as a precaution designed to prevent a potential change in glove size if the fight ends up above the required limit.
