CBS Sports is reshuffling its announcing crews for the 2026 NFL season due to Tony Romo’s recent arrest.

Romo was arrested in Wisconsin on July 23 on suspicion of operating while under the influence. According to the California Post, the cops found an open bottle of booze in the announcer’s vehicle.
A week later, CBS announced that Romo has been placed on leave until further notice. His spot on the No. 1 team has now been filled by future Hall of Fame defensive end J.J. Watt.
“JJ Watt will join Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson as CBS Sports’ lead NFL team during Tony Romo’s absence,” CBS said. ”We will release the remainder of our NFL ON CBS roster at a later date.”
Watt was CBS Sports’ color commentator for the No. 2 crew, working closely with iconic play-by-play announcer Ian Eagle.
So who’ll take Watt’s spot now that he’s moving up? CBS will move Ross Tucker up and allow him to work with Eagle this fall, according to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic.

Tucker joined CBS Sports as a game analyst in 2018. He played in the NFL for seven years, suiting up for the Commanders, Cowboys, Bills, Browns and Patriots.
Will Tony Romo eventually return to the booth for CBS?
According to Puck’s John Ourand, the belief around the NFL world right now is that Romo won’t reclaim his spot as the No. 1 color commentator for CBS.
Marchand, meanwhile, said CBS has been trying to “get out” of Romo’s contract. As of now, the former quarterback has $72 million remaining on his deal.
“My feeling is they’ve been wanting to get out of this contract, they know it’s not good,” Marchand said, via Awful Announcing. ”And not only get out (of this contract), they want to get out of the Romo business, in my opinion. Because if you bring him back, he’s back. There’s no, he’s back, and then you’re going to let him go, in my opinion.”

Only time will tell if Romo can revitalize his broadcasting career.
