The Folsom Police Department will hold a sobriety checkpoint Friday night to identify drivers suspected of being impaired by alcohol or drugs. The checkpoint will be held during the evening hours at an undisclosed location, the department said in a Facebook post.

Police said the checkpoint location was selected based on data identifying areas where impaired-driving crashes have occurred. The operation is intended to remove suspected impaired drivers from the road and improve traffic safety.
“By announcing our checkpoints in advance, we hope to encourage everyone to make a safe plan before getting behind the wheel,” the department said in a Facebook post Aug. 24. “Whether it’s choosing a designated driver, using a rideshare, or calling a friend, planning ahead helps keep everyone safe.”
A previous DUI checkpoint resulted in one DUI arrest and three citations for open container violations earlier this month. More than 800 vehicles passed through the checkpoint, Folsom police said in the Monday post.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sgt. Paul Rice said in the post announcing the upcoming checkpoint.

Police noted that alcohol is not the only substance that can impair drivers. Certain prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can interfere with driving. Driving under the influence of marijuana, whether used for medical or recreational purposes, also is illegal.
According to the Folsom Police Department, a first-time DUI could result in an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended driver’s license.
The checkpoint is being funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
