After 13 years, the Game Getaway is closing its doors. The small business gave customers a place to buy board games — or stay awhile and play them.

For years, the shop brought Folsom gamers together. Childhood memories of playing board games with friends inspired owner Ron Petersen to launch the business, he said by phone.
Customers could spend the day playing any of the 1,400 games on the shop’s Wall of Games. The store also hosted a weekly board game night at the Fat Rabbit, a Folsom pub. And a Dungeons & Dragons group met at the shop for about a decade, according to Petersen.
Petersen announced the Game Getaway’s closure on social media Wednesday.
“We survived COVID and battled inflation, while minimum wage more than doubled since we opened,” Petersen wrote in a Discord post. “With invoices piling up, unpredictable sales, and no sustainable way to continue, I have no choice but to close.”
The shuttering follows a series of setbacks. The store lost its original Sutter Street location in late 2025 after Petersen said the landlord gave him notice that the business had to move so repairs could be made to the building. It had occupied the space for over 12 years, the post said.
The store relocated to 13000 Folsom Blvd., Suite 212, at the Folsom Premium Outlets in February. Petersen wrote that managing the business largely on his own began to feel like a burden.

“Friends and family helped during the move, and I remain grateful,” he said on Discord. “But most of the responsibility still fell on me. I have personally worked seven days a week for more than 13 years, except Thanksgiving and Christmas.”
Finally, he wrote, “the workload became more than one person could carry.”
In August, Petersen tried to sell the store. But according to the statement posted Wednesday, he was unable to find a buyer.
The Game Getaway will begin selling off its inventory, fixtures and its Wall of Games, Petersen wrote. Discounts on new inventory will start at 5% and increase over time.
“At this point in time I do not have a clear plan for what comes next,” Petersen said in a similar post on Facebook. “I do have some notions of something in a more creative direction with some luck.”
He said he needs “a strong send-off” to pay outstanding invoices and give himself time to determine what comes next.
