The 1992 United States men’s Olympic basketball team is widely considered to be the greatest assembly of NBA superstars of all time. After the Americans were humbled by a bronze medal finish in the 1988 Seoul Olympics, USA Basketball left no stone unturned and created a team composed of bona fide legends, in-their-prime superstars, and promising young studs.

Led by Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Charles Barkley, the Dream Team ran roughshod over the competition, winning all eight games by an average of 44 points to bring home the gold medal.
While the games played out like exhibition matches rather than competitive ones, that team has been credited with inspiring players from around the globe to pick up a basketball and pursue their hoop dreams, resulting in Hall of Fame careers for Dirk Nowitzki, Yao Ming, Manu Ginobili, and Steve Nash.
Former NBA stalwart Carmelo Anthony undoubtedly holds the Dream Team in high regard. But just because he has the utmost respect for that team doesn’t mean he doesn’t believe the Redeem Team can beat them.
The Redeem Team can hold its own
While the Dream Team and Redeem Team had similar missions, bringing Olympic gold back to America, they were in different boats. Back in the early 1990s, basketball in other countries had not yet fully developed. However, the early 2000s saw countries like Argentina and Spain ascend to the point where they were considered legitimate threats to Team USA’s grip on the top spot in international basketball.
And so, USA Basketball once again buckled down and created a team led by America’s best hoopers, including Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul, and Carmelo. Although they encountered some rough waters, especially in the final against Spain, they completed their mission, winning gold and restoring order on the world stage of hoops.

Considering how formidable the Redeem Team was, it’s natural to wonder how they would do against the Dream Team. Melo surmised that if they faced that team, they would emerge victorious.

“If we catching a ’92 Dream Team with that team? We beat them,” Melo
“I don’t want to say 50, but it’ll be a highly competitive game. But we win.”

It was an excursion for the Dream Team
While the Redeem Team had a bona fide mission in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the Dream Team treated the 1992 Barcelona Olympics as an excursion. Long before the ball was tipped off, their win wasn’t even in question anymore; everyone was more interested in how much they were going to win by.
In addition, some players on the Dream Team were already getting up there in age. Bird’s Olympic stint was his last time playing competitive basketball, as he retired in August 1992.
Those guys were beat up. Like, Larry Bird was on the ground, like, laying down, his leg kicked out with a beach towel. Like, those guys was…They was, you know, they was enjoying themselves,” Melo shared. “That s–t wasn’t serious for them. You know, it was serious as far as the stakes and what was around it, but, yeah, guys was old, man. Guys was old. We would definitely beat that team.”
The former Syracuse star, though, admitted that it would be a different story if they played a Dream Team that had all its players in their primes. With the trio of MJ, Magic, and Larry matching up against Bron, Kobe, and Melo, that would surely be a titanic matchup that hoop fans would behold.
