As of 1 p.m. Wednesday, incumbent Republican Josh Hoover led the pack with about 54% of the vote, according to preliminary results from the California Secretary of State’s Office. Democrat Amy Slavensky garnered about 44% of the vote.
The Associated Press projects the two candidates will go head-to-head this November.

Hoover flipped the seat from Democratic to Republican in 2022, according to previous Sacramento Bee reporting. He is part of the bipartisan California Problem Solvers Caucus and hosts a political podcast, “Point of Order.” Hoover, who lives in Folsom, was now-Congressman Kevin Kiley’s chief of staff when he was a state assemblyman.
Slavensky spent four decades working in California public schools, according to previous Sacramento Bee reporting. She started as a teacher before working her way to be the superintendent. She most recently was the interim deputy superintendent for San Juan Unified School District, a role she came out of retirement for. She initially retired in 2021 as Amador County Unified School District’s superintendent.
