The Washington Commanders came within a two-point conversion of forcing overtime against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 1, but a series of costly mistakes helped turn their season opener into a 24-22 road loss.

One of the biggest came after Stefon Diggs scored his first touchdown with Washington. Diggs caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jayden Daniels in the fourth quarter, then jumped and hugged the goalpost during his celebration, drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.
Coach Dan Quinn revealed after the game that Washington planned to attempt a two-point conversion after the touchdown. Instead, the 15-yard penalty pushed the attempt back and forced the Commanders to kick the extra point.

Daniels assessed Diggs’ behavior during his media availability, demanding more accountability from the veteran wideout.
“You just gotta be smarter,” Daniels said. “We gotta know situations, situational football. That’s on me for not reiterating that in the huddle. We just gotta be smart. There’s a time and place for everything in celebrations.”
Diggs, meanwhile, accepted responsibility for the celebration after the game and explained that emotion took over after Washington’s offense had struggled to find a rhythm.

“Finally, we hit one, and I get a little overzealous, excited,” Diggs said. “Of course I take full accountability, and I want to win bad, you know — every little rep, everything — so finally when we clicked after not clicking for a little while, it got to me a little. So just being smart.”
Quinn, meanwhile, also discussed Diggs’ mistake further while backing the 12-year pro.
“I love his fight, I love what he stands for, but as the competitor that he is, he knows better than that in that spot.”
Washington eventually got another opportunity to tie the game after Daniels found rookie Antonio Williams for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter. The ensuing two-point attempt, a shovel pass to John Bates, was stopped short.
Daniels finished 18-of-34 passing for 164 yards as Washington generated 295 total yards in its first game under offensive coordinator David Blough. Diggs hauled in four receptions for 55 yards and a touchdown.
The Commanders will remain on the road in Week 2 to face the Dallas Cowboys next Sunday at 4:25 p.m.
