Dak Prescott, George Pickens and CeeDee Lamb were the heartbeat of the Dallas Cowboys’ offense in the 2025 NFL season. The Cowboys were No. 2 in total yards with 6,663 yards and accumulated 471 points, the seventh-highest total in the league. However, this wasn’t enough for Jerry Jones’ team to end the 30-year Super Bowl drought, as the Cowboys finished the season with a 7-9-1 record and missed the playoffs entirely.

The defense has to shoulder most of the blame as it allowed 511 points, the most in the league. A fragile defense meant the Prescott-led offense had to score big in most games, which understandably proved to be a challenge against stout defenses. But, the 2025 season is in the past and the Cowboys enter the new season with a revamped defense and fresh energy.
One thing that is constant is Prescott being the Cowboys’ No.1 quarterback heading into his 11th NFL season. But, there is still uncertainty regarding the quarterback depth behind Prescott. While Brian Schottenheimer confirmed that Sam Howell will be Prescott’s backup, Joe Milton is no longer on the 53-man roster.
The Cowboys decided to waive Milton while finalizing the 53-man roster but ended up bringing him back on the practice squad after Schottenheimer expressed his desire to bring back Milton.
However, the Cowboys’ decision to waive him didn’t go down well with Milton as he labeled it “shocking.” But, he refuses to let it dampen his spirits as he continues to focus on the challenge at hand.

The Cowboys’ latest decision on Milton again raises questions about his future in Dallas. The Cowboys released their unofficial depth chart, which has Prescott as QB1 and Howell as his backup, while Milton, who is currently on the practice squad, is not listed behind Howell. His absence from the depth chart leaves his role with the team uncertain.
We’ll have to wait and see what the Cowboys decide to do with Milton in the coming days as they gear up to play the New York Giants in their first regular-season game on September 13.
