Sidney Crosby is entering the final season of his current contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but the longtime captain is already plotting his future.

The Penguins captain faced questions on Tuesday about how much longer his NHL career will continue during the NHL/NHLPA media tour in Las Vegas, and hinted at what’s next for him.
Crosby revealed that extension talks are underway between his agent, Pat Brisson, and Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas, but he made clear that he is not rushing toward a decision.
“Yeah, (NHL agent Pat Brisson) is talking to (Penguins general manager) Kyle (Dubas),” Crosby said. “It’s just a little bit more difficult, I think, at my age as far as trying to project where you’re going to be. It’s just… It’s different.
“You don’t know where you’re going to be at kind of year to year with how you feel and things like that.”

Crosby, who is entering his 22nd NHL season and the final year of a two-year, $17.4 million extension ($8.7 million average annual value) signed in 2024, left the door open to extending his career for an indeterminate time.

“I’d like to continue playing for a number of years,” Crosby said. “I just don’t know what that number is. And I guess your mind and body tell you that eventually. And right now, I feel pretty good, though.”
The uncertainty also extends to the structure of his next contract, with Crosby acknowledging he’s not decided between seeking another multi-year agreement or proceeding one season at a time.
“That’s something Pat’s going to talk to Kyle about,” Crosby said. “But either way, it’s not something that I’m, like, set on either way to be honest with you.”
The Penguins captain recorded 29 goals and 74 points in 68 games last season. He has 1,761 career points, the most in franchise history, and he brought Pittsburgh back to the playoffs last campaign after missing the postseason for the prior three seasons.
Pittsburgh will open the season facing the Philadelphia Flyers on the road on Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
