Here’s what you need to know:

• San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is in concussion protocol after suffering a concussion, broken ribs and a broken nose in a July 14 vehicle crash, the team’s GM John Lynch announced Saturday. Shanahan will participate on a limited basis as training camp begins Sunday, with Lynch expecting him back at full capacity by the Sept. 10 opener against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia.

• A crash involving a pickup and an Amazon box truck closed a stretch of Highway 50 in El Dorado County for several hours Saturday morning near Ice House Road. No injuries were reported, but the Amazon truck’s compromised methane tank had to be safely offloaded before Caltrans could reopen the highway that afternoon.

• California has confirmed 52 measles cases so far in 2026, more than double the 25 cases reported in all of 2025. Children ages 5 to 19 account for 52% of this year’s confirmed cases, with four people requiring hospitalization and no deaths, according to the California Department of Public Health.

• As the California wine industry faces an oversaturated market and steep drops in consumer demand, some grape growers are considering agave as an alternative crop. About 100 agave growers now farm roughly 1,000 acres across 38 California counties, drawn by the plant’s minimal water needs and lower labor costs, although some worry the market could become oversaturated.

• The Plumas Unified School District will close Pioneer Elementary School, cut staff and eliminate most home-to-school bus service to address a $9.5 million structural deficit. The Northern California district became the first in nearly 13 years to seek a state bailout loan in 2025 and has already cut 90 staff positions this year.
