Veteran MLB umpire Jen Pawol has been accused of making the most bizarre, “worst” call of the 2026 regular season.

Pawol was behind the plate for the Padres vs. Blue Games game in San Diego on Sunday, July 12. During a Jackson Merrill at-bat in the bottom of the second inning, Pawol initially called the pitch a strike, before later claiming that Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman balked on the pitch, sending a runner from third base home.
Both the Blue Jays and the Padres were pretty astounded by the ruling.
MLB fans were pretty confused. Can you call a balk after you’ve already called a pitch a strike?
“Oh well, it just cost them the game, that’s all. No worries,” one fan wrote.
“If it was a balk then why did she still get down in her crouch and call a strike lol. The second you call a balk you wave dead ball not continue to see how it plays out….,” one fan added.
“Balk is wild cause he declared wind up the hitter before .. what are we doing,” one fan added.

MLB fans remain pretty confused by the call
What exactly happened there? Also, it wasn’t the first bizarre ruling of the game. She previously didn’t allow Sung-Mun Song to challenge a pitch, later ejecting hitting coach Steven Souza Jr.
“Padres and Blue Jays were both upset with umpire Jen Pawol. First she ejected Padres hitting coach Steven Souza Jr. after ruling that Sung-Mun Song didn’t challenge in time, then Kevin Gausman and John Schneider were mad after she called a balk to force in a run,” Jomboy shared.
The Blue Jays ended up losing to the Padres, 5-4, in the last game before the MLB All-Star break.
