NFL Sources: Chargers’ Khalil Mack Could Be Traded to One of His Former Teams

If the Los Angeles Chargers’ season continues to spiral out of control, as many expect it to, they could end up making changes, starting with a midseason trade or two.

Among their key players, veteran edge rusher Khalil Mack is the one most mentioned as a candidate to be traded. At age 35, he remains an effective player, but he’s in the last year of his contract, and he could fetch a decent draft pick on the open market.

Mack, who is in his fifth season with the Chargers, could be headed back to one of his former teams, according to one reporter.

Mack’s potential destination

Jonathan Jones of The Athletic wrote that, according to NFL sources, Mack could get traded to the Chicago Bears, the team he played for from 2018 to 2021.

“Again, it is still early, and I always caution against matching any player to any particular team a month before the deadline. But Khalil Mack to Chicago is something multiple league sources told me makes the most sense if both teams continue on their respective trajectories.”

The Bears are 3-1 despite losing promising young quarterback Caleb Williams to a hamstring strain in Week 2. As was the case last year, their offense has been very productive, especially in their ground game, but while they rank fourth in points allowed, they could use one more veteran pass-rushing presence.

As Jones pointed out, they do have the salary cap space to take on Mack’s contract, as well as the right type of draft capital to compensate Los Angeles.

“He signed a one-year, $18 million deal that includes $8 million in base salary,” Jones wrote of Mack. “Trading him this upcoming week would mean a team would need roughly $5 million to $6 million in cap space to take him on.

“The Bears have roughly $9 million in cap space and a clear need to bolster the pass rush. Mack spent four seasons in Chicago. At 35 years old, he is still in search of his first playoff victory.”

L.A. is currently 0-4 and is in the midst of a very tough stretch of its schedule. It will host the Denver Broncos, a team that is probably better than its 2-2 record may suggest, this Sunday, and it will visit the Kansas City Chiefs, who are currently undefeated, the following Sunday.

After their Week 7 bye, the Chargers will then play the Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans and Baltimore Ravens. That means they could still be winless by the Nov. 10 trade deadline.

Through four games, Mack has three sacks, five quarterback hits, five tackles for loss and 14 total tackles (eight solo).
