German mountain safety and outerwear brand Ortovox has announced the launch of two new beacons ahead of the winter season that can help talk you through a tricky situation in the backcountry.

In the past, the brand has been recognized in the mountain rescue space for its innovative and ultralight airback pack designs as well as for the Diract Voice beacon it launched in 2021. Their new beacons aim to build upon the features introduced in the Diract Voice.
The new Focus Voice and Focus Pro avalanche transceivers are each geared towards different user groups, with specific features to differentiate the two transceivers. Both beacons were designed to help eliminate interference from other transmitters and radio signals and increase usability via elements like voice navigation and larger buttons that can be easily operated with gloves on.
The Focus Voice is designed to meet the needs of both experienced backcountry skiers as well as beginners. It uses Ortovox’s patented voice navigation, and provides step-by-step instructions through each stage of a rescue in an effort to keep rescuers calm and shorten rescue times. The beacon’s screen boasts the largest Memory-in-Pixel display on the market and is tailored to be readable even in strong sunlight and while wearing polarized glasses.
The Focus Voice has a search strip of 80 meters, which extends to 90 meters when used with other Ortovox transceivers with Smart Antenna Technology. The transceiver also has a function to decrease interference from other signals put out by smartphones, GPS watches, and other electronics commonly used by backcountry skiers that can inhibit the functionality of a beacon. The Focus Voice emits an audible signal in search and transmit mode when interference is detected. In search mode, the Focus Voice will dynamically adjust the search-strip width in response to interference sources.

The Focus Pro has all the same technical features as the Focus Voice, as well as several added features that Ortovox has tailored to support the needs of mountain professionals. For instance, the Focus Pro continuously displays the distance to the four nearest transmitters, each of which can be selected individually using a scrolling function to aid in the case of multiple burials.
It also allows for search strip widths to be reduced to 20 meters or three meters to focus on nearby signals and minimize interference during complicated rescue scenarios. A hybrid mode can be used as well, which combines the digital display with an analog sound output to help detect interference sources and signal overlaps.
Both transceivers are available in stores this month and through Backcountry.com. The Focus Voice and Focus Pro will cost $400 and $500, respectively.
