The woman was driving a Volkswagen Passat west on Pony Express Trail just east of Carson Road about 2:20 a.m. Tuesday when her car left the road and struck an embankment, said Officer Andrew Brown, a spokesman for the CHP’s Placerville office. She did not appear to have been wearing a seat belt, Brown said.

Investigators were awaiting toxicology results to determine whether alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash, Brown said.
