• An extreme heat warning covers parts of the lower San Joaquin Valley, with highs nearing 110 degrees possible Monday from Bakersfield through Fresno and Merced. Sacramento will fare better thanks to a Delta breeze, with highs in the mid-90s Monday before tumbling to the 80s by Thursday. Forecasters say monsoonal moisture could bring stray showers and thunderstorms to the Sierra on Tuesday and Wednesday.

• A California bill would mandate mental health training for coaches and trainers at public and private higher education institutions following the 2022 suicide of University of Wisconsin–Madison track athlete Sarah Shulze, a 22-year-old from Ventura County. Assembly Bill 1985, authored by Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin, D-Thousand Oaks, passed the Assembly unanimously in May and would require suicide prevention training every two years, with compliance by July 1, 2028. If signed, the measure would be known as Sarah Shulze’s Law.

• Blackbird Mountain Guides released an independent report on the February avalanche near Lake Tahoe that killed nine people, but did not assign or accept blame for the tragedy. The report by former American Avalanche Institute owner Don Sharaf, a mountaineering and snow safety expert, concluded the group of 11 clients and four guides strayed too close to the slopes of Perry’s Peak during a blizzard and was caught by a slide that released nearly 400 feet above them. A separate Sierra Avalanche Center report found the group violated avalanche safety protocols, including recommendations on party size and spacing.
