If FIFA President Gianni Infantino intends on selling off revenue rights of the next World Cup to private investors, that revenue won’t be generated by any of Europe’s top teams.
On Thursday, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) unanimously announced a decision to boycott the 2030 World Cup if FIFA pushes forward with the reported plan to sell the revenue rights.
“BREAKING: UEFA countries unanimously in support of boycotting World Cup in protest at FIFA’s plan to sell stakes in tournament to private investors, say sources. Decision taken at emergency virtual meeting,” Martyn Ziegler of The Times reported.
“We stand shoulder to shoulder with our European colleagues and fully support the collective view. We oppose FIFA’s plans – the FIFA World Cup belongs to football and always will,” an English FA spokesperson said in a statement.
UEFA has had at least one team in a World Cup Final every cycle since 1954 and in all but two Finals in the World Cup’s storied history. It’s members have won 13 of the 23 editions of the World Cup including this year’s (Spain) and five of the last six.
Simply put, UEFA is basically the glue the holds the World Cup together as a true international showcase of excellence.
Fans React
Fans were stunned by the rare show of spine from UEFA to stand up to FIFA. The oft-criticized confederation is being praised to the moon for standing up against private equity interests.

“This is BIG!!! UEFA will boycott the World Cup if Infantino goes ahead with his plans!!!!!” one user wrote.
“The World Cup has no sporting integrity without the confederation which just supplied 75% of its quarter and semi finalists, as well as 5 of its last 6 winners – but more importantly, it ceases to be commercially viable. FIFA’s ‘subsidiary’ is practically worthless without them,” wrote another.
“That’s a massively important and totally justified block decision that will hopefully act as the ultimate wake-up call to FIFA & Infantino. The game is already commercialised up to the eyeballs, it has to have a ceiling at some point. Well done to all involved,” a third wrote.
“Magnificent news. I was worried that smaller UEFA association members heads would have been turned by the money. Commercially Infantino’s sell-out proposal is dead in the water. No European teams = no party.”
The wider soccer world beyond just UEFA is probably just as relieved even if they were less organized in responding to it.
But the 2026 FIFA World Cup showed us that FIFA is more than capable of increasing its own revenue while making uncomfortable changes to the game. If their private equity plans are truly dead in the water, they’ll simply look for other methods of getting their bottom line fatter.
