Two California schools landed on Niche’s list of the top 10 colleges in the United States — and one of those schools was No. 2 in the nation.

Niche recently released its 2027 list of the Best Colleges in America.

The ranking and review website evaluated more than 4,000 colleges and universities across factors including academics, value, student life, career preparation and admissions.

Niche then graded colleges and universities on a scale of A+ through D- on these factors.

“A research university and a college built around social mobility can both be excellent, just by different measures,” Niche economist Allison Shrivastava said in an Aug. 31 news release. “Scoring schools against their own mission, and against what actually happens to students after graduation, gives a richer, fairer picture of where students are likely to thrive.”

Here’s a look at where California colleges ranked on Niche’s list:

Which California universities rank among best in the US?

Two California universities made Niche’s list of the top 10 options for American college students.

Stanford University in Stanford came in second place, behind the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, according to Niche’s 2027 rankings.

The Bay Area university received an overall grade of A+.

According to Niche, the “elite” private university in Stanford has a full-time enrollment of 7,554 undergraduate students, with 350 undergraduate students enrolled part-time.

Stanford has an undergraduate acceptance rate of about 4%, according to Niche.

The university’s popular areas of study include computer science, biology and engineering.

California Institute of Technology — also known as Caltech — ranked No. 6 nationally and also received an A+ overall grade from Niche.

The Pasadena-based private research university is known for its focus on science and engineering.

“Caltech is a world-renowned science and engineering institute that marshals some of the world’s brightest minds and most innovative tools to address fundamental scientific questions and pressing societal challenges,” Niche said.

Niche lists Caltech’s acceptance rate at about 3%.

While national rankings can offer one way for students and families to compare schools, Niche said, colleges serve different purposes and that students should consider factors beyond a single ranking.

“Colleges aren’t one-size-fits-all, and we don’t think rankings should be either,” Luke Skurman, founder and CEO of Niche, said in the Aug. 31 release. “This is the most complete and fair picture of university success we’ve ever published.”

Stanford University and Caltech also ranked among the 2027 Best Colleges in California.

How did Niche rank top options for college students?

Niche evaluated more than 4,000 colleges and universities across factors including academics, value, student life, career preparation and admissions.

Niche based its rankings on the most recent data available from public sources, including the U.S. Department of Education and National Science Foundation combined with millions of reviews from students and alumni.

“Together, these sources give students and families a comprehensive view of colleges that goes beyond a single measure of academic reputation or selectivity,” Niche said.
