Fifteen California universities, both private and public, are in the top 100 list of best U.S. colleges for 2027 compiled by U.S. News & World Report.

The list was released Tuesday, Sept. 22. Two California schools tied for 5th place in the rankings.
The magazine ranked more than 1,700 colleges and universities using up to 17 measures of academic quality and graduate success
Criteria include graduation rates, retention, graduate earnings, peer reviews and faculty salaries, among other factors.
After a 15-year streak, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology replaced Princeton University in the top spot, the publication said.

How did California schools fare?
The California Institute of Technology and Stanford University tied for 5th place in the national rankings.
The University of California, Berkeley, and University of California, Los Angeles, tied for 20th place. The University of Notre Dame also tied for 20th with the two California schools.
The University of Southern California tied for 27th place with the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill.
The University of California, San Diego, tied for 29th place with the Georgia Institute of Technology.
The University of California, Davis, and University of California, Irvine, tied for 34th place. Boston University, the University of Florida, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the University of Texas – Austin, University of Wisconsin–Madison and Wake Forest University also all tied for 34th place.
The University of California, Santa Barbara, tied for No 44 with Rutgers University – New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Santa Clara University tied for 55th with The Pennsylvania State University – University Park, Purdue University, and the University of MIami.
The University of California, Merced, came in at 69th with Michigan State University and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
The University of California, Riverside, and Pepperdine University are 80th on the list, tied with Clemson University, the Colorado School of Mines and Drexel University.
Chapman University and the University of San Diego ranked 100th, tied with Auburn University, Creighton University, Elon University, Florida International University, St. Louis University, the University of Iowa and the University of South Florida.
How did California schools fare on other lists?
Pomona College tied for No. 3 on the list of best liberal arts colleges with Bowdoin College, Claremont McKenna College, Swarthmore College and the U.S. Naval Academy.
California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo ranked No. 1 for best regional colleges in the West.
California State Polytechnic University – Pomona came in second, while St. Mary’s College of California and the University of Redlands tied for third.
The California Institute of Technology and Stanford University also tied for 5th place on the list of best value schools in the United States.
The University of California, Berkeley and University of California, Los Angeles, tied for No. 1 on the list of best public universities in the United States.
