That’s according to the personal finance website WalletHub. On Sept. 21, the website posted a list of 182 American cities, ranking them based on 15 indicators of living standards for women. They summed up those 15 standards into two categories: economic and social well-being, and healthcare and safety.
Each city was assigned a grade out of 100, with points assigned based on factors such as median earnings for female workers, the unemployment rate for women, share of women-owned businesses, the restrictiveness of abortion access, and local life expectancy rates for women.
The best cities for women, noted Chip Lupo, a WalletHub analyst, “offer job security and high pay, enabling women to achieve greater financial independence.”
“They also prioritize safety, including minimizing crime, and they provide easily accessible medical care at high-quality hospitals,” Lupo added.
For “additional insight,” WalletHub also interviewed a panel of 11 experts in topics such as education, family science, women’s studies, and the prevention of gender-based violence. Many of the experts surveyed noted that, along with healthcare and economic headwinds, there is an undue caretaking burden placed on women, as well as insufficient services and protections for women of color and LGBTQIA+ women.

What are the best cities for women in the country?
A number of Californian communities made it into the top 10 best cities for women in the country.

WalletHub financial writer Adam McCann noted that Fremont ranked particularly high for having one of the highest life expectancies for women at birth (84 years), the lowest ranking of women without health insurance, and a strong job market for women, along with the second-lowest poverty rate.
Where does Sacramento rank?
On WalletHub’s list of the best and worst cities for women, Sacramento landed at #38. It was 85th in women’s economic and social well-being, and 39th in women’s healthcare and safety.
In comparison to other nearby California cities, Oakland was 23rd, San Jose was 26th, Santa Rosa was 85th, and Stockton was 127th.
