New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye has started 34 games in the NFL and has had a roller-coaster start to his career. He has played at an MVP level and led his team to the Super Bowl, but also looked like the worst quarterback in the NFL at times.
When a quarterback with Maye’s talent has such an up-and-down start to his career, there will be people who question whether he is franchise quarterback material. This type of scrutiny isn’t unique to Maye specifically, as it is with every elite quarterback. Even MVP quarterbacks who have won the Super Bowl have question marks.
This morning, Jones and Keefe from WEEI talked about how much more proven quarterbacks than the third-year superstar continue to be questioned.
“Patrick Mahomes is the second-best quarterback of all time today… The first season he missed the playoffs. The first season he wasn’t in an AFC title game. He was hurt. The Chiefs were bad. After last season, he got questioned.”
“Josh Allen, every time the Patriots play him, how do you have to hear about how he’s never won and he can’t win, and he won’t win.”

“I think some of these criticisms are fair. All of these elite quarterbacks get [them]. And we can’t have some questions about Drake Maye? Like, that to me is wild.”
When a three-time champion and two-time NFL MVP and a quarterback who has been a face of the NFL over the last decade get questioned, in Patrick Mahomes, no quarterback is safe from scrutiny.
Playing quarterback in the NFL is one of the toughest positions in all of sports. Aside from trying to dissect defenses, they get all the attention off the field as well. When the team plays well, they get all the praise, and when the team loses, they get all the blame.
For Drake Maye, the questioning comes with the territory. If he wants to be mentioned with the likes of Mahomes and Allen, the league’s best, he will have to shrug off the media’s scrutiny and ball out just like he has the last two weeks against the Bills and Raiders.
