Six days ago, Townsend won her first US Open title in the women’s doubles event. She was hoping her momentum on the court would carry over to WTA Tour’s next marquee tournament.

Townsend defeated Tatjana Maria in her opening match at the Guadalajara Open, setting up a showdown with Marta Kostyuk. Unfortunately, that match was called off once Townsend found out she needed emergency surgery.

“Hi everybody, on the heels of achieving my first career Grand Slam at the US Open, I was so excited to play in front of all of you in Guadalajara,” she said in a statement. “Because of emergency surgery, I am forced to withdraw from the GDL Open, and it breaks my heart.”

Townsend later shared a selfie from her hospital bed along with a brief message.

“Welp.. this s— definitely wasn’t on my bingo card,” Townsend wrote on Instagram. “Through trails and tribulations..still I rise. I’ll update y’all soon.”

Brutal timing for Taylor Townsend.

Townsend is known as a doubles specialist, but she proved at the US Open that she can compete at the singles level as well.

After taking down French Open finalist Maja Chwalinska in the opening round, Townsend crushed Taylah Preston in straight sets. She then knocked off No. 15 seed Diana Shnaider in the third round, setting up a date with former world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.

Even though Townsend lost to Sabalenka, her game has clearly improved. Hopefully, her latest procedure doesn’t derail her momentum on the hard courts.
