The New York Yankees received an encouraging update on Luis Gil’s recovery Tuesday as the right-hander officially began a minor league rehab assignment with High-A Hudson Valley.

Gil has not pitched in the majors since late April because of shoulder inflammation. His return to game action marks another milestone in his recovery, though the Yankees are expected to take a cautious approach after his extended absence.
The Yankees entered Tuesday at 66-52, sitting second in the American League East and holding a strong position in the Wild Card race while awaiting reinforcements for their pitching staff.
Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reported that Gil started his rehab assignment with High-A Hudson Valley. Phillips also noted that Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre released veteran reliever Rafael Montero, while Double-A pitching prospect Chase Hampton was placed on the temporarily inactive list.

Gil’s rehab assignment comes after a difficult start to the 2026 season. The 2024 American League Rookie of the Year went 1-2 with a 6.05 ERA over four starts before shoulder inflammation sidelined him.
The 28-year-old threw 19.1 innings with nine strikeouts and 11 walks before beginning a throwing progression in June that has now advanced to live game action.
The Yankees are expected to gradually build Gil’s workload, making additional minor league starts before considering a promotion to Triple-A or a return to the major league roster. His lengthy layoff makes an immediate return to New York unlikely.
Meanwhile, Montero’s release creates additional flexibility in the organization’s upper-level pitching depth, while Hampton’s inactive designation temporarily removes one of the club’s top pitching prospects from Double-A competition.
