Yolo County reported its first human case of West Nile virus this year in a news release on Tuesday.

The Woodland resident who tested positive was hospitalized, according to the Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency’s Communicable Disease Program.
Two people have died of West Nile virus complications in California this year. The first death was reported by Kings County last week, and the second was reported a day later by Glenn County.
Nationwide, 181 cases had been reported across 30 states, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In California, 18 people across 12 counties had tested positive for the virus.
West Nile virus is the most common mosquito-borne illness in the state. Last year, there were 113 human cases and 11 deaths in the state. Mosquito season runs from about May to October. The first positive sample in the region this year was collected in an area of Sacramento County south of Tahoe Park in May.

Yolo County announced in early July the first mosquito sample from the county to test positive for the virus. A dead bird found near Woodland tested positive for the virus in early June.
About one in five people infected with West Nile virus developed flu-like symptoms, including fever, headaches, body aches and nausea. Roughly one in 150 infected people developed a severe neurologic illness. Older adults and people with weakened immune systems faced a higher risk of severe illness.
“This first human case is an important reminder that West Nile virus continues to pose a public health threat in our communities,” Gary Goodman, district manager of the Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District, said in a news release. “We are entering the time of year when West Nile virus activity typically peaks, so it’s important for residents to protect themselves from mosquitoes.”
