An American cyclist in the Tour de France narrowly avoided a terrifying crash over a cliff during a portion of the lengthy race.

American Sepp Kuss was riding through the mountains in France when he lost control of his bike. He crashed into a barrier and, thankfully, was blocked from going over a cliff by a wall netting. But it could’ve been disastrous.
Saturday, the penultimate day of the 2026 Tour de France, featured a lot of movement. But, thankfully, that movement did not include Kuss going over a cliff during the mountain portion of the racing.
“Sepp Kuss crashed twice in the final kilometres. Once in the tunnel and then this crash, which cost him the lead. Richard Carapaz now in front,” Rene Bugner shared.
Thankfully, Kuss is OK. That could have been really, really bad.
Fans thankful that the American cyclist is OK
Fans are appreciative of that barrier, that’s for sure.
“The crash could have cost him his life. Thank god for those barriers 😵💫 Scary to watch!” one fan wrote.
“The people that designed and installed that fence to be EXACTLY the right length need a raise!” one fan added.

“Terrible for Kuss but boy is he also lucky … 2 more metres and he could have gone over the edge,” one fan added.
“I bet that got his heart pumping. These guys are some of the best most courageous athletes in sports,” one fan added.
“Thank God for that safety netting. Tired riders giving it their all. Yesterday was bad enough,” one fan added.
It was a really scary moment, but thankfully, the longtime American cyclist is OK. The final day of the 2026 Tour de France will be taking place on Sunday. Hopefully, we’ll avoid disastrous crashes in the final day of the race.
