An Elk Grove man was wounded with birdshot in a Siskiyou County shooting after a neighboring property owner said he opened fire when the man’s dog ran toward his property line, sheriff’s officials said.

The Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office arrested Russell Asher, 39, of Montague, in the Sept. 5 shooting that wounded 49-year-old Baojue Lin of Elk Grove as Lin prepared breakfast on his father’s property. Deputies said Asher fired birdshot at Lin, striking him in the face, head, shoulder and torso and sending Lin to Fairchild Medical Center in Yreka.
Lin told deputies at the medical center that he heard dogs barking and the sound of gunfire at about 10:30 a.m. He went outside to investigate and was immediately struck by the pellets. Lin could not identify the shooter, but said the shooter was likely one of two brothers who lived on the adjoining property on Karina Drive near County Road A-12, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputies contacted Asher, who said he fired multiple rounds after Lin’s dog ran toward his property line. Asher also said he fired at Lin because Lin was firing at him with a handgun.

After searching both properties, deputies said they found no evidence supporting Asher’s account that Lin had fired at him. Deputies did find Asher’s firearm and spent rounds that they said struck Lin.
Deputies arrested Asher on suspicion of assault with a firearm and battery causing great bodily harm and booked him into Siskiyou County Jail.
