Election ballots may have been stolen during Sacramento mail truck break-in

Voters’ ballots may have been stolen Tuesday during a theft in the College Glen area of Sacramento, officials said.

A break-in of a mail truck was reported around 2:30 p.m., according to U.S. Postal Service Postal Inspector Jonathan Lanning.

The mail stolen from the vehicle may have included election ballots, which were processed for delivery on that day, Lanning said.

The United States Postal Inspection Service in investigating the break-in. Lanning said he had not confirmed that ballots were stolen.

The agency is offering a reward of up to $100,000 for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the responsible parties.

Sacramento County is one of the hardest-hit areas in the nation for mail theft, Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho said in March. He was announcing the formation of the Sacramento Mail Theft Task Force, a coordinated effort among the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, the Rancho Cordova Police Department and the U.S. Postal Service and its Postal Inspection Service.

Mail theft has led to identity theft, financial fraud and delayed government assistance, particularly for seniors, Ho said in March.

Following the theft on Tuesday, Lanning said that voters should take precautions this election season to ensure that their ballots are received securely.

Residents can use the California Secretary of State website to track their ballot and confirm that they have been both received in the mail and accepted by the county election office.

If a voter believes their ballot was stolen, they should immediately reach out to their county election office to request a replacement, Lanning said.

The Postal Service’s Informed Delivery program also allows customers to preview images of mail they can expect in the next few days, including their ballots, he said.
