Box truck driver with major injuries after colliding with cars, crashing off I-5 overpass

The driver of a box truck was hospitalized with major injuries Monday afternoon, and a second motorist suffered minor injuries after the truck collided with multiple vehicles on Interstate 80 before overturning from an Interstate 5 overpass and landing on the roadway below, the California Highway Patrol said.

The incident began just before 12:30 p.m. when the truck was traveling west on Interstate 80 east of Truxel Road in Natomas and collided with two separate vehicles, according to the CHP’s North Sacramento office.

The truck continued west to the northbound Interstate 5 connector, where it traveled across the northbound lanes before striking the center median guardrail, leaving the roadway and plunging onto San Juan Road beneath Interstate 5, the CHP said.

Sacramento Fire Department crews extricated the truck driver, who was trapped in the wreckage. The driver was taken to a local trauma facility with major injuries, fire officials said.

A second motorist involved in one of the earlier collisions was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries, firefighters said.

The CHP continued to investigate the incident Monday afternoon.
