The Consumer Price Index for urban consumers in July rose 0.1% across the nation, but also showed a 2.9% drop in gasoline prices over June, an Aug. 12 report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showed..
National gasoline prices in July showed a 24.6% increase over July 2025, the report said.
The index measures the change in prices paid by consumers for goods and services.
Nationally, Americans saw a “welcome” average price drop of 10.7 cents per gallon of gasoline on Aug. 10 over the previous week beginning Aug. 3 according to price-tracking website GasBuddy.
The organization put the national average price at $3.94 per gallon, the company said.
The average price per gallon in America is up 9.5 cents from a month ago and is 85.6 cents per gallon higher than a year ago, GasBuddy said.
“However, the wild ride continues,” Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said. “Iran is pushing back against a reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.”

What are current gas prices in California?
As of Sunday, Aug. 16, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in California was about $5.57, according to AAA.
That’s roughly $1.51 more than the current national per-gallon average of $4.06 for regular gas.
“While gasoline demand is down, crude oil prices are keeping pump prices higher than normal for this time of year,” the organization said. “So far, this is the highest August on record when it comes to the national gasoline average.”

Why is gas so expensive in California?
California gas prices have been steadily rising since late February as tensions in the Middle East increased and concerns about global oil supplies grew.
California hit its highest average gas price on record in June 2022, when regular gasoline reached $6.44 per gallon statewide.
