A vehicle’s passenger was killed and the driver was injured early Friday after a car crashed into the center divider on Interstate 80 near Watt Avenue in Sacramento County, according to California Highway Patrol traffic logs.

The crash was reported through an iPhone collision notification about 3:30 a.m. on westbound I-80 just west of Watt Avenue on the border of Arden Arcade and North Highlands.
CHP North Sacramento incident logs reported a blue Honda Civic crashed into the center divider. Dispatch audio from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District reviewed by The Sacramento Bee reported that the driver had called 911 as well.
Firefighters arrived to find the passenger of the vehicle dead, according to dispatch logs. The female driver was hospitalized with serious injuries, according to firefighters.

The identity of the passenger was expected to be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office after family are notified of the death.
The collision prompted a closure of westbound I-80 while authorities investigated and worked to clear the scene. CHP reported the roadway clear about 5:45 a.m.
