Sacramento State has been ranked as one of the top schools in California and the United States for tuition and tax dollar value in 2026, Washington Monthly said.

The university places No. 7 among public institutions nationally, No. 5 among California colleges and No. 16 among all institutions evaluated in the U.S., the school said in a news release.
The Washington Monthly list “measures how well colleges and universities serve students and contribute to the public good.”
“Its evaluation considers how effectively institutions enroll and graduate students from lower- and middle-income backgrounds, keep college affordable, improve graduates’ economic prospects and encourage public service,” the university said.
The ranking said Sacramento State graduates had average earnings of $64,511 four years after graduation. The school ranked 77th for affordability.

Washington Monthly has released the rankings annually since 2005, the publication said.
The list ranked schools for affordability, access, outcomes and service.
Six other California State University campuses placed among the top 30 among all institutions evaluated in the U.S.
- California State University, Northridge, ranked 3rd.
- California State University, Los Angeles, ranked 9th.
- California State University, Long Beach, ranked 10th.
- California State University, Fresno, ranked 11th.
- California State University, San Bernardino, ranked 23rd.
- California State University, Fullerton, ranked 24th.
Stanford University ranked 39th.. California State University, Stanislaus, ranked 45th.
