Sending your freshman to Sacramento State today? Here are some banned dorm items

For Sac State and many other colleges and universities, it’s move-in day. But if you packed the car with your freshman with a load of sheets, mini fridge and lamps without checking on dorm rules, not everything may be allowed once you and your student arrive.

Many schools have strict regulations against certain electronics and appliances in order to keep campus safe from fire hazards and other concerns. Each university has specific guidelines for what students can and cannot bring.

The Sacramento Bee did the research and made a list of common items that are not allowed in college dorm rooms.

Here’s what to know:

What furniture will be provided at the dorm room?

A typical dorm room includes a few pieces of basic furniture and some fundamentals for students to begin their campus life. These are the basics according to BigFuture:

  • XL twin bed
  • Desk
  • Chair
  • Lamp

What kitchen appliances can you not bring to a dorm room?

Most kitchen appliances are considered a fire hazard. Many dorm rooms will have a common room with a refrigerator and a microwave to share. Again, each school and living areas have their own rules. Here is a list of kitchen appliances usually not allowed in a dorm room, according to EdNavigator.

  • Microwave
  • Blender
  • Toaster
  • Toaster oven
  • Air fryer
  • Hot plate
  • Electric grill
  • Slow cooker

What home appliances shouldn’t you bring?

Common items in your home may not be allowed in the dorm room. Make sure you are bringing the appropriate items approved by the university. Here’s a list of generally forbidden items from Sacramento State.

  • Space heaters
  • Appliances with an open heating coil(s)
  • Electric blankets
  • Sun lamps
  • Candle warmers
  • Devices that melt or warm wax
  • Black lights
  • Power strips without circuit breakers and reset buttons
  • Halogen lamps

What can you bring?

  • Coffee pot or electric kettle (Must have temperature control and auto shutoff with no open heat source)
  • Mini-fridge
  • Hair dryers/straighteners
  • Electric shavers

Can you bring a pet to the dorm room?

More than 96% of college campuses do not allow pets of any kind in the dorm room, according to Study International. There are schools that make special accommodations for students with disabilities who require the assistance of a service animal. There are some schools that allow students to have fish. When is Move-In Day for Sac State?

Sac State’s Move-In Day is Wednesday, Aug. 26. First-year students will move into seven of North Village’s eight residence halls—Desmond, Draper, Jenkins, Klamath, Mt. Whitney, Riverview, and Sierra—while upper-classes and graduate students will move into North Village’s American River Courtyard and Hornet Commons, according to a news release by the school.
