Lanes of a key Pocket neighborhood road will be shut down periodically for the next six weeks as crews repair an 8-foot-wide depression in the road, according to the city of Sacramento Department of Utilities.

Crews began working Monday on Pocket Road near East Shore Drive to replace a sewer manhole and about 50 feet of a sewer main and repave the intersection, according to the project’s webpage.
The work is meant to address the 3- to 6-inch-deep depression on Pocket Road, city spokesperson Carlos Eliason said. The depression “has been the source of traffic concerns and complaints from nearby residents,” Councilmember Rick Jennings said the social media post about the project.
Just over a quarter-mile of the westbound lanes of Pocket Road — between Greenhaven and East Shore drives — will be closed from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day during construction, according to Jennings, whose district includes the Pocket neighborhood. During the final paving, which will take about a week, the lanes will be shut down completely.

Motorists will not be able to use the intersection of Pocket Road and East Shore Drive during construction. Westbound drivers on Pocket Road will be directed to a detour using Greenhaven Drive, Rush River Drive, Lake Front Drive and West Shore Drive, adding about a half-mile to the route.
Initially, the city wanted to keep westbound traffic flowing during construction by using the center turn lane, Jennings said in the social media post. However, the utilities department said on the project webpage that the closures are necessary because the “sewer work requires significant excavation, and groundwater conditions in the area make maintaining traffic through the construction zone unsafe.”
