The Eagles Omitted Lane Johnson From Public Roster List Sunday

Lane Johnson’s surprise retirement is already causing some confusion on the team‘s list of active/inactives this week.

Following the Eagles’ decision to keep the retired All-Pro tackle on the 53-man roster for the rest of the season (for cap purposes), Johnson’s name wasn’t mentioned on the full list of Philly’s inactives for Sunday AM’s game vs. the Jaguars.

Creating a situation that will probably be something to monitor all year until his eventual removal after June 1, 2027.

Lane Johnson left off of ‘full list’ of Eagles’ Week 5 inactives

Johnson’s name was noticeably absent from Philadelphia’s list of Week 5 inactives, which included six players:

  • WR Hollywood Brown
  • WR DeVonta Smith
  • RB Saquon Barkley
  • S Marcus Epps
  • OLB Jonathan Greenard
  • C Drew Kendall

That seemed to imply that Johnson would be “active” for Sunday’s London game against the Jags. However, the Eagles’ communications with the league made it clear that Johnson (obviously) wouldn’t be available for this weekend‘s game at Wembley.

According to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the plan is for Philly to keep Johnson on the 53-man roster until at least June 2 for salary cap reasons, which also leaves the door open for an albeit unlikely return in the event that he changes his mind.

Carrying Johnson until then will also allow them to avoid a cap acceleration hit until 2028 while they pay out the rest of Johnson’s $1.3 million base salary.

Per RapSheet, Johnson also received an option bonus of $21.7 million before the season and the expectation is that he will pay back several million dollars — which is still TBD as far as an exact number.
