It shows the increasingly detailed preparation that has become common in international football. Rather than leaving a shootout to chance, teams now analyze goalkeepers’ tendencies, use data and video clips, and even work with sports psychologists to help players remain calm under pressure.

According to Reuters, penalty psychology expert Geir Jordet explained that Mbappe is one of the quickest penalty takers in world football. Despite taking his kicks almost immediately after the referee’s whistle, he consistently scores because of his confidence and decisiveness, showing there is no single “perfect” penalty routine.
The preparation appeared to pay off. After a 1-1 draw following extra time, Egypt converted three of their four penalties to defeat Australia 3-2 in the shootout, booking their place in the Round of 16.
